The Beginning
Story is an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment for a period of time. the difference between story and plot is that plot doesn't have a setting or characters all it has is a plot.
I think the article makes perfect sense. I think too often we find the plot first because the sequence of events will have some form of hook to it, a twist or some shock factor to keep the audience engaged. I'd prefer my audience to be part of a world I'd created, not simply waiting to see what happens next. By knowing 100% who your characters are, you can throw any event in because you will know exactly how they would react to it. Plot focused films have a tendency of having unbelievable characters with no personal story to them. And as Abbas Kiarostami says "Good cinema is what we can believe and bad cinema is what we can't believe".
I agree with Forster's definition of story it doesn't hold up for film.
